Cruz Azul’s fundraising event ‘Rock My Soul’ proved a huge hit, raising 1532.50€ for the charity, which helps with vet bills for pet owners on low incomes and works with local communities to control feral cat colonies in a humane way. The owners of The New Arches in Los Alcázares provided the venue for the event, which was organised by John “J. J. Soulman” whose friends in the music business were keen to take part. Rock My Soul was a sell-out event and guests were treated to some great performances by super compere and DJ, Paul Allen, Roxy Housewine (Amy Winehouse Tribute), Johnny Lea and the great J. J. Soulman. Cruz Azul volunteer, Emmanuel Vadon, added some rock flair with his American Ford Galaxy which caused quite a stir when he drove in.

“We are overwhelmed by the support of our local community and we have so many people to thank who made this happen.” remarked Lyn Baines, Cruz Azul President. “Local businesses donated a total of 21 raffle prizes and, thanks to Lesley Eburne and her team, we raised 780€ on the raffle alone.” she said.

Thanks to the continuing generosity and support from the public and local businesses, the fantastic amount raised at this event and the growing success of the Donation Centre in San Javier, Cruz Azul can continue to help more pets whose owners are on low incomes and continue its ‘Trap, Neuter and Return’ campaigns. “We recently lost Sue Thomason, who was a driving force for the charity, but I think that she would be proud of the fact that we are continuing her legacy and driving forward the way she would have wanted. We are keen to move forward with other initiatives in the near future to encourage responsible pet ownership, such as sterilization, microchipping and vaccination” commented Lyn.

Cruz Azul’s Donation Centre is situated on the Avenida de la Unión in San Javier, next door to Yorkshire Linen and is open Monday to Saturday from 10.00 am until 2.00 pm. They sell clothes, accessories, jewellery, household goods, furniture, bric-a-brac and lots more, so why not pay them a visit? Even better, donate your unwanted clothes, furniture and items to show your support. Call 693 017 616 for more information.

Cruz Azul Murcia is a registered charity (No. 11.720/1a) and exists to provide veterinary care for the sick and injured pets of people in need and to promote responsible pet ownership. Cruz Azul Walks on the Bark Side Again

Cruz Azul supporters gathered with their dogs on the promenade in Santiago de la Ribera on Sunday, 28 September for their second ‘Walk on the Bark Side’. On arrival, many of the roads in Santiago de la Ribera had been closed, due to a half-marathon, but the determined walkers and barkers still managed to arrive in good time at the start line. Despite heavy, dark clouds and the threat of thunderstorms, the weather was kind and nobody got wet on the 3 kilometer walk along the prom.

Over thirty owners and dogs completed the walk, helping to raise 236 Euros for the charity. All shapes and sizes of pooch took part; including Daisy Doo, the English Bulldog with her special buggy and Ray, the Miniature Schnauzer, adorned with a colourful lei, who is from Australia and wanted to say ‘Aloha’ to everyone. First across the finish line was Darren Messenger with Tobi.

Each of the participants received a ‘doggy bag’ containing treats, dog waste bags, water with bowl and a special medal. The bottled water was kindly donated by Time Out Sports Bar in San Javier. “Our first Walk on the Bark Side was so successful that people asked us to organise another one and we’re delighted to see so many people, in spite of the inclement weather. It was great to have a drink and a chat together at the end of the walk too” said Cruz Azul President, Lyn Baines. “The success of today’s event is down to the great work by the Cruz Azul team: Sue Thomason, Ian Roberts, Marg and Tony Fryers, and all our lovely supporters.”

Cruz Azul is run along similar lines to the PDSA in the UK and its mission is to provide veterinary care for the sick and injured pets of people in need and to promote responsible pet ownership. As a new association, Cruz Azul’s priorities will be to:

  • Provide and maintain veterinary services on a stable, sustainable and long-term basis.
  • Expand these services, in line with a clear and controlled Business Plan as funds and circumstances permit.
  • Encourage funding, by raising awareness and developing an understanding of their work.
  • Deliver pet health initiatives.

In addition to fundraising events, the Cruz Azul shop, next door to Yorkshire Linen in San Javier, is open daily and sells clothes, accessories, jewellery, furniture, household goods, bric-a-brac, etc. The shop is open Monday to Saturday, from 10.00 to 14.00 each day.

A second shop will be opening on Friday, 24 October in San Pedro del Pinatar on the Avenida Artero Guirao, opposite the Confiteria Alicia. Manager, Sue Thomason will be delighted to see new customers in San Javier and to receive donations for both shops there. Ian Roberts will be at the new San Pedro shop on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10.00 until 14.00 to receive donations. They are always in need of furniture and Cruz Azul can arrange collection of large items. You can email Sue on or call her on 693 017 616.

Cruz Azul’s Volunteer Co-ordinator, Barbara Burks, would love to hear from anyone who has some time to spare and would like to help with fundraising. You can email Barbara at: or you can call 691 919 804 for more information.

Cruz Azul is Squeaky Clean!

Cruz Azul Murcia was treated to a special event to raise funds by local businesses on Wednesday, 13 August. Clean Me car wash and Airpark Murcia, based on the Oasis Boulevard, got together to raise awareness of the charity by donating 20% of all sales on the day. They were joined by The Mobile Nail Spa and Avalon who also donated to the charity.

Businesses from Oasis Boulevard generously donated prizes for the raffle and the prizewinners were:

Di – Free car wash at Clean Me
Monica – Lunch for two at The Arches
Cathie – 20€ voucher from The Mobile Nail Spa
Anthea Prentice – A week’s bike hire for 2 from the Oasis Centre
Graeme Wilson – Fish and chip meal for 2 from Cafeteria Panaderia Luisines Cake
Stuart Smith – A bottle of Cava
Victoria Brook – Fruit basket

“We’re touched by the generosity of local businesses in what is still a tough economic climate” remarked Lyn Baines, Cruz Azul President. “It was a very hot day and not the best for cleaning and valeting cars, but the guys from Clean Me worked their socks off and did us proud. A huge thank you to Michelle Andrews for organising the event and to all the local businesses who kindly donated raffle prizes to support us.”

Busy Christmas Market

It was a busy Cruz Azul Christmas Market at Time Out in San Javier on Saturday, 7 December and many turned out to find Christmas gifts among the wide variety of items available. Rustic Pottery provided some excellent gift ideas, from animal plaques to personalised hearts and gift tags. The Bling Bling stall was busy, displaying some beautiful hand-made jewellery, and Sue’s Flowers had some tempting flower displays and provided a free gift-wrapping service. Other items included fragrant, hand-made soaps, personalised diamante dog and cat collars, coasters, table mats, calendars and bookmarks, delicious home-made cakes and Christmas decorations.

“It’s our first craft market and we’re very happy with the results. We’re planning more during 2014 and welcome enquiries from crafters who would like to be involved.” remarked Cruz Azul President, Lyn Baines. “We’re extremely grateful to all our stallholders for supporting the event and to Sue and Gary at Time Out for providing the venue free of charge.”

Cruz Azul would like to wish everyone a very happy Christmas and looks forward to welcoming you to their shop, next to Yorkshire Linen in San Javier, which raises funds by selling clothes, accessories, jewellery, furniture, bric-a-brac and household goods. Red Tops Rock!

The Red Tops 2

Staff at The Arches in Los Alcázares rose to the challenge last Thursday evening with a full house for The Red Tops’ performance. “This has to be the biggest audience that we’ve had so far” remarked owner, Ali Chaplin. “We had in excess of 230 people, with standing room only”. The Red Tops have proved a popular rock band, with a great following at venues around the Mar Menor area. Thursday night was no exception and they rocked the audience with their energetic and infectious style of playing, filling the dance floor in no time. One guest brought along his vintage Ford Galaxy to add a true retro flavour to the evening.

Both Ali and The Red Tops are great charity supporters and this night proved no exception, donating over 200€ to a local animal charity. “Thanks to all my customers for buying raffle tickets and to Chris, Karen, Hayley and Sue – you all worked so hard! Also, thank you to the Red Tops; what a band and what nice lads!” commented Ali.

More live acts are lined up to entertain you at The Arches: Wednesday, 25 September at 9.30 pm sees the return of Greg Bannis, the former lead singer of Hot Chocolate and on Friday, 27 September at 9.00 pm Soul Power will be hosting their end of Summer party, promising to take no prisoners and funk up The Arches with a six piece band. Both nights are going to be very busy, so please call 653 081 341 to reserve your table.
