Our Shop is Off to a Flying Start

Shop front

When the new Cruz Azul shop opened its doors to the public for the first time on Saturday, 23 November, volunteers were greeted by a queue of people, determined to be first to grab the bargains. The Cruz Azul volunteers have worked hard over the past few weeks to get the shop ready, freely giving their time and skills. “I am very proud of the final result” said Cruz Azul President, Lyn Baines. “This has been very much a team effort and everyone has pulled together to make sure that we opened on time. I thank each and every one of the volunteers for their hard work and dedication, with a special thank you for Sue Thomason who brings over 35 years’ retail experience to the charity. We’re very lucky to have such a talented Vice President” she said.

The Cruz Azul shop will be fundamental to raising funds, enabling the charity to help people on limited incomes gain access to veterinary care for their pets. Since Spain’s plunge into economic crisis, the region has seen the number of abandoned pets and cases of poorly cared for pets drastically increase in the region as people have struggled to keep their heads above water. Cruz Azul will be working with vets in the Los Alcázares, San Javier and Sucina areas and is raising funds to enable the referral of sick or injured pets for treatment, as well as working alongside animal rescue charities to help find forever homes for abandoned pets.

When established, Cruz Azul also plans to run campaigns for sterilisation, vaccination and micro chipping to help reduce the stray animal problem in the region and will also promote responsible pet ownership. They can only do this with public support and the Cruz Azul shop is the first initiative in the charity’s major fundraising campaign to start the process.

Cruz Azul will be delighted to receive donations of furniture, bric-a-brac, clothes, accessories, household goods, books and DVDs, so please contact them by calling Sue on 693 017 616 or email shop@cruzazulmurcia.es

Cruz Azul is currently recruiting more volunteers, not only for the shop, but for other important roles within the organisation. So, whether you have a little or a lot of time to spare, please email info@cruzazulmurcia.es or complete the form below.

Cruz Azul values their volunteers and the contribution that they make to enable them to carry out their work. They will agree with each volunteer the amount of time the individual will spend each week helping Cruz Azul and both parties will then sign a volunteer agreement. The volunteer roles offered within Cruz Azul benefit all concerned and Cruz Azul strongly believes that it is a two-way relationship that should benefit both parties. “Our firm intention is to do everything we can to ensure that everyone has a positive volunteering experience.” commented Lyn Baines.
Cruz Azul Murcia is a registered charity (No. 11.720/1a) and exists to provide veterinary care for the sick and injured pets of people in need and to promote responsible pet ownership.
